Pope Urban II was born in France. He became the Pope on July 24,1099. Pope Urban II gave speech to the Crusaders to start the Crusades. He talked about a just war in his speech. He even overcame his hatred for the Byzantines and let them fight with the Crusaders. Pope Urban II started the crusades becuase he thought that the christians needed to capture their holy land, which was jerusalem. Three religions thought that jerusalem and the land around it. The christians believed that jesus was crucified there, the muslims believed that Mohammed ascended to heaven there, and the Jews believed that sollomon built his temple there. Pope Urban II sent the christians to recapture it.
